Intro to Lindall PL

Music composed by Peter Dizozza and Brian Olphie for Lindall's PARADISE LOST

“Without a doubt, Terrance Lindall is the foremost illustrator of Paradise Lost in our age, comparable to other great illustrators through the ages, and someone who has achieved a place of high stature for all time.” Robert J. Wickenheiser, Ph. D.

Dear Ms. Nii,

Thank you for your email about the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center’s new humanities initiative. I am always delighted to learn of an organization devoted to the humanities, and I wish you all the best with this exciting endeavor.

Sincerely,
Drew Faust, President of Harvard University

Terrance Lindall's art for Paradise Lost appears on the 2008 cover of the Modern Library college text book, The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton, Edited by William Kerrigan, John Rumrich and Stephen M. Fallon.

Holt Rinehart & Winston used another Lindall Paradise Lost image in a 2009 high school textbook, with a first run of 370,000.

Cambridge University Press uses another Lindall illustration on the cover of the 2014 Cambridge Companion to Paradise Lost.

"Terrance Lindall’s illustrations for John Milton's Paradise Lost are among the best-known for this epic, along with those of William Blake and Gustave Dore. Published in 1983, some plates from it appeared in the Heavy Metal Magazine. The World Wide Web now gives broad access to Lindall's images. Lindall's art for Paradise Lost appears on the 2008 cover of Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton, Random House 2008; edited by William Kerrigan, John Rumrich and Stephen M. Fallon" Milton Revealed, Berkely University

Professor Wendy Furman-Adams of Whittier College has recently conducted in depth research on Lindall's work and written a chapter for an upcoming book “Heavy Milton: Terrance Lindall’s Paradise Lost, 1979-2015.” to be published by Duquesne University Press.

"...my fellow Miltonists agreed with me that Lindall's newer work shows more and more sensitivity to this poem we all love so much. And, to my knowledge, Lindall is a pioneer in illustrating some scenes (such as Eve discovering Adam under a plane tree)." Wendy Furman- Adams

I love Terrance's work, it's incredibly visceral and arresting. Particularly as a scholar of Milton, I think that his visual interpretations of Paradise Lost are some of the most powerful which I've seen. Thank you for carrying the book! It would be fantastic if some sort of major exhibition could come out of the volume some day. Wishing you the best,
